沖縄の北部に位置する本部町にやんばるシープという
カフェ、アトリエ、ホープチャペル教会が一体となった場所がある。
ブレントさんはレッドパイン英語教室もしている。
ブレントさんときよみさんは以前住んでいた今帰仁村から、急な引越しの必要があり、
本部町のこの場所に20年前に引っ越してきた。
神様に、この場所に来るのは偶然ではなく目的がある。と言われてはいたものの、
きよみさんにとって自分のことを幼少から知っている地元に戻ってくるのは
簡単な決断ではなかった。
神様は彼女に、”この場所で良い知らせを伝えることが出来れば、他のどこででもできる。”と言われたそうだ。
そして引っ越して間もなく、この場所で家族と子供達の友人達が集まり、教会を始めた。
しかし段々と集まる人も減っていき、ブレントさん自身もレッドパイン英語教室を始め、その仕事が忙しくなってきた頃に、教会は一度中断状態に。子供たちも大きくなり、きよみさんのお母さんのお世話が忙しくなったりと家族の生活は変化していく。
そんな頃、ブレントさんは昔からの友人であるホープチャペルの牧師と再会し、彼の手助けを教会ですることになる。本部にいながら他の場所で活動するのは不思議だったが、これがのちのホープチャペル本部を生み出すきっかけとなる。
きよみさんの方は子供たちが自立したのをきっかけに押し花教室をスタート。イエス様が羊飼いで、私たちはみんな羊。山原にひっそりと住む羊を自分に投影して”シープ”と名付け、押し花カフェとしてスタートした。すぐにシープは地元の人々が集う場所になった。
いろいろな人生の旅路を通り現在のシープ、ホープチャペルがある。
ブレントさんは、「いろんなことをやったけど、うまくいかないことの方が多かった」と語る。
いろいろな教会に関わりその大変さを知る中でいろいろな人と繋がり、励まし合うことの大切さを感じていると語る。現在、コロナの状況のなかでカフェは休業中だがホープチャペル、英語のクラス、押し花のクラスは行っている。この場所を通して人々がイエス様に出会い変えられていく姿を見たい。いろんな国の人に来てもらいたい。押し花を通して神様の言葉を伝えるような展覧会がしたい。この場所には神様から受け取った二人の熱い思いが溢れている。

Yanbaru sheep is located In Motobu at the northern part of Okinawa. Sheep has many faces like cafe, studio and church. Brent teaches English there at a language school called Red Pine as well.
Brent and Kiyomi suddenly needed to move out from the place they used to live and they moved into Motobu 20 years ago.
God spoke to them that moving into Motobu had a special purpose for them, but Kiyomi’s heart was not at ease since Motobu was her hometown and everyone knew her there.
God helped Kiyomi to see that, if you could share the gospel in your hometown, you could share it anywhere else. Soon after their move to Motobu, they started to get together with their children and children’s friends as a church. But gradually people stopped coming and eventually they stopped gathering by the time Brent’s teaching work got busier. After some time, their children had grown up and Kiyomi”s mother needed more care from her. Their lives were changing.
One day Brent bumped into an old friend who is a pastor from Hope Chapel and was led to help him at Hope Chapel for a while. It was a little strange to help at a church far from Motobu, but this eventually led them to start Hope Chapel Motobu.
Kiyomi had been teaching Oshibana (creating images using pressed and dried flowers) for several years already. Since Jesus is the Shepherd and we are the sheep, she had the impression of being sheep living in the rural Yanbaru area. That is where the name Sheep came from, and was the name of the Oshibana/Pressed Flower Cafe and Gallery. Many people started gathering there.
This Hope Chapel was born out of different experiences of their lives. Brent said that he tried many things but not many succeeded. Now he senses that being connected to different people and encouraged by each other as the body of Christ in the difficult times is so important for this season. Currently the cafe is closed due to Covid, but Hope Chapel, the English classes and Oshibana classes are open. When you enter into the space, you can feel their passion for God. When we asked them what they want to do through this place, they answered that they really want to see people encountering God through this place, want to welcome more people from different nations and want to share the Word of God through the exhibition of Oshibana artworks made in Oshibana class.
Akamatsu, “Akamachiya” which the locals call it, is a mama shop (mom and pops store) near Motobu market, and is Kiyomi’s home. If you would like to meet them, please visit Sheep or Hope Chapel or “Akamachiya!”
